ELCA discussion topic: Table and Font: Who Is Welcome? Led by Pastor Gabi and LaVinnia Pierson

Our denomination teaches that “admission to the Sacrament is by invitation of the Lord, presented through the Church to those who are baptized” (The Use of the Means of Grace, Principle 37). But what does that mean in practice? Who can receive communion and at what age? Are other Christians welcome at our communion table? How are the sacraments of baptism and communion related? Each generation anew must answer these questions for itself, if it wants to remain faithful to its traditions, but at the same time inviting to seekers and an increasingly non-Christian surrounding culture. In this class we study the sacraments of Holy Communion and Holy Baptism using the latest ELCA study materials and theological resources on the topic. See http://www.elca.org/Resources/Worship[Offsite Link].

Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer — The Classic Exploration of Christian Community — led by Randy Shattuck

What does it mean to be the Church today, in 2014, in Cupertino California, at Bethel? How is God calling us to live? What does God want us to do? As the famous singer, songwriter John Mayer asks: “am I living it right?” These questions will be explored through Life Together, one of the earliest and most accessible works from Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Lutheran pastor and martyr. How can a young seminary student who lived more than 70 years ago help us envision about our faith life together? What can his words teach us? Come, let us explore together.
