iServe Sunday iPod Drive
November 30, 2014
Mission Outreach is conducting an iPod drive beginning Nov. 30th for
Music and Memory,
a non-profit organization that collects gently-used iPods and chargers for redistribution to nursing homes.
Based on extensive neuroscience research on how the brain responds to music, the Music and Memory program was developed to help those with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other mental and physical challenges.
This program, where individuals are given iPods with personalized music, has been tested in more than 140 long-term care facilities in the U.S. and Canada.
The results show that residents become more socially engaged, improving their quality of life.
Personalized music creates a calmer atmosphere for the residents, and helps to reduce agitation, sundowning, resistance to care, and the reliance on anti-anxiety and anti-psychotic medications.
