“The GOOD Samaritan” Today’s Gospel reading reminds us that GOODNESS is not the sole possession of a particular race, ethnic group, gender, nation, or people. Goodness is a gift from God! But once the gift is given, what do we do with it? To be partners with Jesus means receiving the gift of goodness and using it for all people!

“Potentially Good Harvest” Ah yes, Christians of this 21st Century know this all too well. Today Jesus calls us again to be those laborers—to Partner with Him in working to bring the “Harvest of God’s Love and forgiveness” to others. The work will not be easy. But it is such important work! But then, we are reminded that it is not work that is about us, but rather work that is about God’s Kingdom!

“Journeys into Grief and Hope” “Follow me,” Jesus says as he walks toward Jerusalem and his death. One man replies, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus responds, “Let the dead bury the dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Like many in Scripture, we are sometimes called to journey with God into darkness, trusting that God is present with us and brings hope and new life out of grief and loss.
Guest speaker: Nick Arnett is a Bethel member who recently traveled to Haiti with a medical relief team from Jordan International Aid[Offsite Link] as triage medic and chaplain. Nick serves on the board of directors of Lutheran Social Services[Offsite Link].

“Blessed, Healed, Freed” “Return to your home,” Jesus tells a man now cured of his demons, “and declare how much God has done for you.” God blessed the people Israel despite their rebellion, and God’s love for us is just as steadfast. Jesus healed the sick, conquered death and made us one with all God’s people. How do we declare how much God has done for us?!

“Forgiven and Forgiving” Our sin and guilt are great; God’s mercy and forgiveness are greater! But even though we have been forgiven so much, so often we fail to forgive others. What would life be like if we lived out the mercy and grace of Christ? How would it change your life? How has it changed your life?

“Blessed to Bring New Life” How does God bring new life into your life? How do you represent opportunities for new life in the midst of loss and death with those around us? Today we are invited anew to participate in Jesus’ amazing ability to bring new life both as receivers of God’s great gift of new life, AND as sharers of that gift with others.

“The Holiness of Three (in one)” It is one of the most difficult parts of our faith for most understand: One God in three parts. Yet, in many ways it is one of the ways we are blessed by God. Today we explore this blessing as gift and as the empowering presence that enables us to be a blessing to others.

Pentecost
“Knowing and Experiencing God!” Pentecost is sometimes called the church’s birthday, but might more appropriately be called its baptism day, since the gift of the Spirit is what gives us the power to live for God everyday. It is the fiftieth day of Easter where we celebrate the Holy Spirit, through whom and in whom the people of God are empowered and re-created. Ultimately, it is about experiences of how God is at work in and through us AND those miraculous moments we recognize God’s work!

“That They May Be One” As the Easter season ends, we remember a prayer Jesus prayed shortly before his death—and we realize that Jesus offered this prayer not only for the first disciples, but for us and for those who come after us! The healing and freedom of Christ is ours to share. Do we dare?

“What Kind of Peace is This?” We all want peace, don’t we? So what does Jesus mean that the peace he brings is NOT the peace the world might give? In this time of anxiety, growing polarities in attitudes and beliefs, and less willingness on the part of many to listen to one another, it does us well to list to Jesus and examine the peace he offers us daily—the peace that passes all human understanding.

“On Being Sheep” OK, you are sheep. However, there are times when we just “go with the flow” and in no time find ourselves lost. So whose voice do we listen to? The shepherd? The Good Shepherd? Today we see how the anxiety of our lives in the midst of lostness can be turned around with just the right voice—the voice of the one who loves us into new life, Jesus.

Easter Sunday
“Turning Anxiety into Hope: The Miracle of Easter” For those of Jesus’ time, what we know as Holy Week was a time of incredible anxiety. Jesus was dead—murdered. Who would be next? And then the most amazing thing none could have anticipated. JESUS GOT UP—literally rose from the dead—and here is the truly amazing part, HE BESTOWED ON ALL HE ENCOUNTERED HIS PEACE—THE PEACE OF GOD! And out of the anxiety and apprehension of that moment Jesus brought a HOPE that went well beyond human understanding. We too live in fear-filled and anxious times. And, although caused by different things, FEAR IS FEAR and the resultant anxiety can be felt and experienced in almost every aspect of our lives. And yet, if Easter tells us nothing else, it reminds us that we truly do not have to fear for God’s peace is still being offered to us right NOW—we will only receive it. Using the resurrection appearances of Jesus as the base, each week of this Easter Season we will look to how Jesus’ risen presence still calms our anxiety and overcomes our deepest fears. We do not have to live in anxiety and fear for the risen Christ is with us to bring us no less than the HOPE that is eternal!

“Reconnecting with the Holy: In Sacrificial Love” “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” The criminal crucified next to Jesus says these words—but truthfully, aren’t they the same sentiment behind the shouts of “hosanna!” that greeted Jesus when he entered Jerusalem? The people expected a mighty king who would topple the Roman regime and put in a place a new regime. But Jesus’ power is not about retaliation or control; it is about service to the least of these and forgiveness for all. As we enter into this new reality, Jesus says, “You will be with me in Paradise.”

“Reconnecting with the Holy: In Poverty and Extravagance” Which is better, being rich or in being poor? When we’re rich we can too easily begin to believe we can use our wealth to fulfill our deepest needs. When we’re poor we can too easily believe that if we just had more we would be happy. In both cases the focus gets turned in on ourselves and therefore separates us from God as well as each other. Today, we are challenged to think in different terms—that it’s not about wealth or poverty—it’s about relationship: the HOLY relationship God wants with us and how we can live that relationship out with others. And that experience certainly is HOLY!

“Reconnecting with the Holy: When We Have Lost Our Way” We have to experience being lost before we know the joy of being found. In what ways are we lost—unable to be the people God knows us to be? If we are able to hear and believe that God’s love can’t be earned, then we will know that even when we can’t “find” God, God has already found us!

“Reconnecting with the Holy: In Our Brokenness and Sin” What most disconnects us from God? What most disconnects us from each other? Is it not our own brokenness and sin? So how do we connect with those things—those people that mean the most to us? FORGIVENESS! It is the truly Holy act that heals, and makes new, and reconnects us to God and the sacredness of life. And, here is the truly HOLY part of forgiveness—it always comes as a gift!

Do we reject Christ’s healing and forgiveness for ourselves? For others? Even so, nothing will stop “the one who comes in the name of the Lord” from bearing God’s love and healing into the world.

“Reconnecting with the Holy: In the Wilderness” Too often we view the “wildernesses” of our lives as the last place to experience the Holy and Sacred. Yet, Jesus’ experience in the wilderness proves just the opposite. The “wilderness”—that place of temptation and struggle—is the very place we find Jesus and connect anew to the holiness of God’s sheltering love. “Fear not,” Jesus tells us. “For I am with you in the wilderness!”

Transfiguration of Our Lord
“God Awaiting Our Response: on the Mountain and in the Valley” Jesus was transfigured on the mountain top—and then he returned to his life and call. Here he is shining with unearthly glory, but later he will be crucified. Have you ever had a mountain top experience? Have you wondered why God has forsaken you? How has Christ transformed your life and the life of this world?

“God Awaiting Our Response: in Truth, Freedom, and Faith” Confirmation is a “confirming of faith.” But even more, it is the “Affirmation of the Baptismal Promises” made by parents at Baptism. Today, the class of 2010 Affirms their faith in this public setting in response to their parents faith AND in response to God’s gracious love in Jesus Christ. We celebrate this faith together as the church and pray that such faith will grow and sustain these young people throughout their lives!

“God Awaiting Our Response: Like a Bridegroom” For the most part, it is still the man who is expected to ask the woman for her “hand” in marriage. And, just as the woman may wait for the man to ask her, he then must wait for her response. It can be a difficult time in the life of the relationship. In that same way, God has invited us into full relationship (with God and each other). God must then wait for our response? Today, through the imagery of a wedding we explore how God actively seeks for our response.
