“Back to Basics: Stilling the Storms” Why did the disciples cross to the other side of the lake? O.K. it’s a stretch. But, it is an important question (no joke intended). Today we not only ask that question but are brought face to face with what they encountered—a terrible storm. And, of course, who calms the storm? This is much more than a story about Jesus calming the “storms” of life. This points us to Jesus in the midst of our journey no matter what we might face! Pastor Randy Pabst |

“Back to Basics: Basic Gardening” Gardeners know about seeds. However, as obvious as Jesus’ parables might be about scattering seeds and the wonder of the mustard seed, there is another point in all this. Jesus is reminding us that our sowing in life is grounded not in production but in faith. Today we are challenged and affirmed in a life of faith and trust in God that empowers us to truly sow the seeds of faith and allow the miracle of God’s love to “grow” well beyond our imaginings! “Sacramental Living” Following Jesus is a journey that requires both courage and stamina. This Sunday, we celebrate that God has given us sacraments to power our steps. Holy Baptism is the on-ramp to the Christian life. Through water and the Holy Spirit, God claims us as His own and gives us a lifelong identity. Holy Communion is nothing less than fuel for the Christian life. In, with and under the bread and wine, Jesus gives us a burst of grace that propels us forward in service. Isn’t it amazing that God uses water to get us moving and bread and wine to keep us moving? Pastor Rick Sherrill |

“Gifts from an Empty Tomb… Power!” On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Holy Spirit, through whom and in whom the people of God are empowered and re-created. Pentecost is sometimes called the church’s birthday, but might more appropriately be called its baptism day, since the gift of the Spirit is what gives us the power to live for God everyday. Today we celebrate that the Spirit is still at work in each of us and in the entirety of creation. Pastor Rick Sherrill |

“Gifts from an Empty Tomb… Purpose” Most of us know about the 40 Days of Purpose from Pr. Rick Warren. Nice idea—but what about the rest of our lives? Don’t we all need PURPOSE every day?!? Today, Jesus invites his closest followers into a purpose that actually goes beyond their lives on into our very lives—that is, to bear witness to the one who suffered; who died; who rose from the dead for the sake of the world! “Gifts from an Empty Tomb… Clarity” One of the worst human flaws is our tendency to compare ourselves to others. Immediately after Peter is forgiven by Jesus pointed toward his future, he wants to know what the future holds for another disciple (the one who Jesus loved!) Jesus’ simple response cuts through our walls of pride, shame and resistance—“Follow Me!” Today we hear the inspirational story of how a group of teenagers have answered Jesus’ call. “Gifts from an Empty Tomb… Forgiveness” Forgiveness is tough stuff. We all have a tendency to hold onto our pain and regret far longer than we should. Ever since Peter denied knowing Jesus on Good Friday, he lived with a guilt few of us can comprehend. Now Jesus takes Peter back to that night and replaces his guilt with a reason to live. Perhaps forgiveness is as much about the future as it is about the past. Pastor Rick Sherrill |

“Gifts from an Empty Tomb… Guidance” Most people don’t particularly like being told what to do—that is, unless it’s what they already want to do. Today, Jesus tells the disciples what they must do to catch fish. Their own efforts have failed rather miserably. Maybe that’s why they were ready to listen. Maybe, for us, it is after we have failed (miserably?) that we are truly ready and able to listen to where Jesus wants us to go. In any case, the promise is that when we listen and respond miracles happen! Pastor Randy Pabst |

“Gifts from an Empty Tomb… Peace” When Jesus makes his post-resurrection appearance to his disciples, the first words out of his mouth are, “Peace be with you.” What does this greeting mean for us as we live through turbulent times? How can we experience the peace that Jesus offers in the midst of our overwhelming, overburdened, over-stimulated existence? Here’s a hint: stop, drop and laugh. Pastor Rick Sherrill |

“Radical Hospitality—Inviting Others” The parade has started. There is a party atmosphere! A King is coming… But, what is this? He is riding on a donkey—that can’t be a King. Or, is this a King like no other? Yes, this is the king whose Kingdom is the one we all long for. Yes, this is the King that has come to save us… Even from ourselves. Now it is up to us to do the inviting of our families, and friends, and those we know and even those we don’t know to come and meet this King. Yes, the King is coming… Pastor Randy Pabst |

“Radical Hospitality—The Lost Will be Found” Jesus would have made a lousy economist. Risk ninety-nine well-behaved sheep to find one who has gotten lost? Crazy! Tear up a house to find one lost coin, and then throw a party to celebrate its recovery? Crazy! Thankfully, Jesus is a savior, not an economist. Today we celebrate God’s unwavering focus on changing our status from lost to found. Pastor Rick Sherrill |

“Radical Hospitality—Invited Forward” Jesus attends a dinner party at the home of a respected Jewish religious leader and turns conventional wisdom upside down. First, he heals a man on the Sabbath. Second, he teaches them to forgo the place of honor at the table (near the host) and instead sit at the lowest place at the table. Third, he teaches them to invite outcasts to the table instead of their family and friends. What is Jesus getting at? Simply put, God is the one who gives us status and honor and we should be living lives of confident humility. Pastor Rick Sherrill |

“Radical Hospitality—Invited Beyond the Norms” It started out just fine. That is until the man was robbed, beaten, and left for dead. But someone would stop—it was after all a well traveled road. But no one did. But they had good excuses—they were within their religious rules. Until a man did stop—until he responded beyond the rules and norms—until at personal sacrifice, he saved the man’s life. And he was a Samaritan—one of those people who aren’t like us—you know what I mean! And we are all challenged to think outside the box when it comes to living out our faith. Today we take a look at what that might mean for you! Pastor Randy Pabst |

“Radical Hospitality—Invited into Freedom!” All the disciples of Jesus wanted to do was send the people away so they could eat and rest. Jesus would have nothing to do with that idea. “(You) Give them something to eat,” he told them. Jesus, of course, had been feeding them all day—and was about to feed them again—literally and in his teachings. But there was more. They were now fed for a purpose—now they were FREE to feed others as well—both literally and by witnessing to them about the true love of God. As we are fed—how are we freed to feed others? Today, we explore this possibility… Pastor Randy Pabst |

“Radical Hospitality—Invited into Healing!” Jesus is a realist. When a sinful woman crashes a dinner party at the house of a respected Pharisee and begins to wash Jesus’ feet with her tears and lavish expensive ointment on them, he clearly understands the reasons behind her emotional outburst. She is overcome by thanksgiving and treats him as royalty because her sins were so numerous. By forgiving her, Jesus removes a great burden from her life. In contrast, the Pharisee doesn’t treat Jesus as royalty because he can’t comprehend his own sinfulness. The forgiveness that Jesus offers is lost on him. Which character do you most resemble? “Liberty Through Dependence” We all want freedom; it is the dominant part of our national DNA. However, our culture champions the concept of “freedom from” a long list of things. In contrast, our God seeks to give us “freedom for” nothing less than holy living. “Hope Through Suffering” Hope is perhaps the world’s greatest currency. Everything from our daily mental outlook to the international economy is influenced by how much of it we have. Our culture promotes a hope based on strength and triumph. In contrast, our God has shown that hope is best achieved through courageous suffering. It has been said, “No pain, no gain.” This advent, perhaps a slight change is in order: “His pain, our gain.” Pastor Rick Sherrill |

“Comfort Through Action” In this culture we tend to equate comfort with inactivity and rest. However, when the prophet Isaiah proclaimed comfort to Israel he meant something much different. He proclaimed that God’s idea of comfort was active—first God’s activity and then ours. On this first Sunday of Advent we begin our preparation for Christmas and God coming to us once again as we explore how God’s action initiates our action which is the very definition of Biblical comfort. “Are You Prepared for this World?” A key function of worship is to help prepare you for living in the world. This is not to help you escape—but to be given by God greater tools for living in this world but not necessarily “of” this world.
